The National Library of Palestine announces the winners of the “National Library Research and Studies Award”

Ramallah - National Library: Today, Wednesday, the National Library announced the names of the winners of the “National Library Research and Studies Award 2023”, which included the fields: tangible and intangible heritage, arts, and history.

The names of the winners as follows: 

- First award (shared): Researcher Mahmoud Ali Mahmoud Alwan, from the Gaza Strip, a research titled: “The Role of Fine Art in Resisting the Israeli Occupation,” and researcher Mahmoud Musa Ziyad, a research titled: “British Colonial Prisons in Palestine.”

- Second award (shared): Researcher Tahseen Yaqeen, with a research titled: “Features and Trends of Palestinian Theatre,” and researcher Donia Al-Amal Ismail Al-Aqra’, from the Gaza Strip, a research titled: “Theater in Palestine: Hope and Challenges.” 

- Third award (shared): Researcher Muhammad Abd al-Jawad al-Batta, from the Gaza Strip, a research titled: “The Policy of Detaining the Bodies of Palestinian Martyrs 1948-2022,” and Researcher Imad al-Asfar, a research titled: “Gypsies in the Palestinian Media.”

The total number of applicants for the award who met the award terms and requirements was (65) participants, and they were evaluated by a jury headed by Dr. Hamdan Taha, and included: Dr. Riad Al-Aila, member, Dr. Fayhaa Abd Al-Hadi, member, Dr. Montaser Jarrar, member, Dr. Johnny Mansour, member, Dr. Walid Salem, member, Dr. Iman Al-Saqqa, member, Dr. Issam Halayqa, member, Dr. Ayman Youssef, member, and Dr. Issa Al-Sari, member.

The jury approved a unified model for evaluation based on five criteria: originality and research methodology, language and style, documentation method, results and cognitive contribution.

The participating research was distributed into the following sub-fields: Studies in theater, studies in fine arts, studies in the issue of prisoners and prisons, and studies in the fields of archeology, history, architecture, and cultural heritage.

Martyr, prisoner and thinker Walid Daqqa, is the Cultural Personality of the Year

On the other hand, Issa Qaraqe, on behalf of the National Library, announced Walid Daqqa as the Cultural Personality of the Year. Walid Daqqa, was martyred last April after (38) years of detention, in an Israeli occupation hospital, where he suffered from deliberate medical negligence policies. It should be noted that his body is still being held by the Israeli occupation authorities.

The National Library is offering this tribute to the family of the martyr Daqqa in appreciation of his cultural and intellectual legacy and the cognitive contributions he made during his long years of detention, such as books, studies and articles, which formed a vision and a lever for national culture and resistance literature.

 

Winners Biography

 

- First award

Dr. Mahmoud Ali Alwan

He holds a PhD in artistic philosophy from the Faculty of Art Education, Helwan University/Cairo. Member of the Palestinian Fine Artists Association. Supervisor assigned by Al-Aqsa University to several courses in the field of woodworking. He participated in many group exhibitions in the Gaza Strip. Currently works as a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Al-Aqsa University.

Dr. Mahmoud Musa Ziyad

He holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Jordan, participated in many international scientific conferences, and worked as an assistant professor in the Master's program of Philosophy in Islam at Al-Quds University. In addition, he published his book Al-Farabi’s Theory of Knowledge in 2016. currently works in the Palestinian Ministry of Education.

 

-Second award

Tahseen Yaqeen

Writer and critic, he writes in the fields of literary criticism, arts, travel literature, and journalistic articles. He worked in the fields of culture, education and media. He participated in many Palestinian and Arab seminars and conferences with critical and research papers. He has published several books, including, Fine Arts and Ugly Wall: How Art Resisted the Wall of Annexation, Expansion, Checkpoints, and the Features of the Palestinian Narrative after Oslo.

Dunia Al-Amal Ismail 

She holds a master’s degree in economics and political science from Al-Azhar University. She served as Executive Director of the Creative Women's Association. Feminist activist and researcher. She worked as an advisor on issues of violence against women at the Palestinian Ministry of Women’s Affairs in 2017. Member of the research advisory board at Muftah Foundation. Advisor to the National Observatory on Violence against Women. Certified trainer on gender and women’s issues.

 

-Third award

Dr. Muhammad Al-Batta

He holds a PhD in modern and contemporary history from the Institute of Arab Research and Studies. A researcher and writer specialized in the history of the Palestinian issue. Trainer of scientific research skills and modern tools. An international academic evaluator accredited by the American Research Foundation. Member of the Arab Arbitrators Team of the Arab Conferences Network. Certified trainer from the Adult Education Center, Ain Shams University/Cairo. works as a part-time professor at Al-Quds Open University.

Imad Al-Asfar

Director of the Media Development Center at Birzeit University/Palestine. He was the editor-in-chief of news then director of the general department of programs at Voice of Palestine, then at Palestine TV. He supervised the preparation and production of many programs and documentaries. He works as a member of the Professional Ethics Committee of the Journalists Syndicate. He has published several training guides and books, such as: Stations from the History of Palestinian Media.
